Basic Havan Guide
The Sacred Fire Ritual
A Havan (also called Homa or Yajna) is a sacred fire ritual in which offerings are made to the divine through fire. It purifies the environment, invokes divine blessings, and is performed for specific intentions — health, prosperity, new beginnings, or ancestral peace.
What You Will Need
Step-by-Step Guide
Choose an auspicious time and clean the space thoroughly.
Set up the havan kund facing east.
Perform Ganesh Puja first.
Light the fire using camphor and mango wood.
Offer ghee into the fire with 'Swaha' — the sacred offering word.
Add havan samagri with each mantra recitation.
Recite the specific mantras for your intention (health, prosperity, etc.).
Perform Purnahuti — the final complete offering.
Apply vibhuti (sacred ash) from the havan to the forehead.
Distribute prasad — fruits and sweets.
A Havan is best performed with a trained pandit, especially for specific intentions like Maha Mrityunjaya Havan or Navgraha Shanti. The basic Havan described here is suitable for general home use.
