How to Do Puja at Home
A Beginner's Complete Guide
Home puja is the foundation of daily Hindu devotional practice. It does not require elaborate rituals — even a simple daily puja with sincerity is considered more valuable than an elaborate one done without devotion. This guide covers the essential elements of a daily home puja.
What You Will Need
Step-by-Step Guide
Wake early (Brahma Muhurta — 4–6 AM is ideal), bathe, and wear clean clothes.
Clean the puja space and wipe the murtis or pictures with a clean cloth.
Light the diya — this is the most essential act of puja.
Light incense and offer it to the deity.
Offer water (Achamana) — sprinkle water around the puja space.
Offer flowers to the deity.
Offer prasad — whatever you have, offered with devotion.
Recite the deity's mantra or simply speak from the heart.
Perform aarti — wave the diya in a circular motion before the deity.
Conclude with a brief prayer and distribute prasad to family members.
The most important element of puja is bhav (devotion and sincerity), not the elaborateness of the ritual. A simple daily puja done with genuine feeling is far more valuable than an elaborate one done mechanically.
